Today I want to share with you my favourite Bible verse. Personally this is the verse that I recite in my head the most when I'm feeling anxious, it gives me so much comfort and helps me to be calmer. My favourite Bible verse is Psalm 46:7 which reads: "The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah." When I'm feeling anxious I always recite this verse to help me to be calm again. I find it really helpful to keep remembering it over and over again in my head. This works really well for me because it forces me to only think about this positive encouraging verse and allows me to actively push away the anxious thoughts. This verse is made up of two sections: 1. "The LORD of hosts is with us... 2. ...the God of Jacob is our refuge." The first section gives encouragement that God is with us if we turn to Him, and follow the guidance he has given us in His word the Bible. In 2 Chronicles 15:2 we read: "The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you…" The second section of Psalm 46:7 shows how God can be our refuge. God will be our refuge in times of trouble if we make him our refuge - if we turn to him by reading His word and praying to him. In Psalm 142:5 we read: "I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living." Again in Psalm 57:1 we read: "Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast." From these two verses, we see that the Psalmist turned to God in times of trouble and made God his refuge. In summary, I find Psalm 46:7 really helpful when I'm feeling anxious, because it is so comforting to think about:
God is with me
God looks after me by angelic care
God is my refuge.
God will keep me safe
I know that I can turn to Him in prayer and read His word to give me comfort. Anxiety can make us feel unsafe and panicked, and therefore to think about these things reassures me that God is with me and everything will be ok.
